Sweet Potato Fries-Hash-ish

I was dying to try my new Paderno spiralizer to make Curly Sweet Potato Fries. Because I used a raw sweet potato and they are generally pretty hard vegetables, I really had to spend some time and use some muscles to get the whole thing cut. If you have your own (or win the one here) you'll see what I mean ;) I tossed them with olive oil and salt and baked them in the oven.

Unfoooortunately I don't know whether I used too much olive oil or cut the fries way too thin or what, but they didn't really turn out as fries. They were more of, like, sweet potato hash? Kind of. I was really disappointed that they weren't fries, but once I got over that shock they were a lovely side dish. I mean, how often do you get to twirl your sweet potato on your fork?

The next time I spiralize a sweet potato I am going to intend to make it into a hash in the first place - then I'll add some chopped onion, garlic, green onions, and various spices. Mmm! Sounds good!

I loved hearing all of your favorite TV shows and movie quotes yesterday! There's nothing like putting your feet up and relaxing with a movie or a good tv show. Another one of my favorites is Modern Family -- it was just on tonight on ABC and I LOVE it! It's hysterical! So witty and clever! Have you guys seen it? Also, thanks so much for all your well wishes yesterday. I definitely have a cold but I am feeling a bit better than I was this morning. I'm trying to drink big green smoothies and eat a ton of veggies, but there's nothing I want more than a big plate of spaghetti with baguette and non-dairy butter, or some Creamy Macaroni and Cashew Cheese -- aka comfort food!!! What do you guys do/eat/drink when you're not feeling well? I so rarely get sick now that I've vegan and I'm really bummed that I caught this!!! Any suggestions or advice for your illnesses?

Curly fries? Hash? Doesn't matter...sweet potatoes rock my face off.

Maybe they would be good in a skillet? Like for breakfast?

I haven't been sick in yearssss so honestly I would have no clue what to do!

I just bought sweet potatoes this morning to kill a craving for sweet potato fries...but now I think it's morphed into a sweet potato hash craving! In any case, your newest spiralized creation could surely take care of either one.

I haven't had a cold in years either, but when I'm feeling not-too-good, I usually stick to clear broth soup and ample rest.

Hot damn do I love sweet potatoes!

Hmm, when I'm sick I think I crave comfort foods as well. Carb-heavy stuff. When I'm hungover, too. :P

That still looks amazing! Fitnessista might be able to help with getting those tasting like curly fries. I'm pretty sure she doesn't use olive oil... I could be wrong though. Maybe that made them a little soggier so they couldn't crisp up?

When I'm sick, I reach straight for a PB & Jam sandwich. It's my comfort food from when I was a kid. I also like tomato soup and hot tea with fresh ginger and lemon - that clears up my colds in a flash!

Those sweet potatoes look delish! I just read somewhere to not use oil and toss with a little potato starch to get them crispy-haven't tried it yet but now I'm craving some fries.
Hot soup and hot tea are my go to foods when I have a cold.

I've been obsessed with sweet potatoes lately! Being a vegan I hardly ever get sick either, but when I do all I want are carby things & tea.

Oh my gosh, I can't wait to get my spiralizer, just to make those! I rarely get sick, but when I do I'm all about my toast and tomato soup!

Absolutely love sweet potatoes. They definitely are harder to crisp up. I find that if I don't bake them at a high enough temp, they tend to be mushier.

That looks fantastic - is there a bad way to cook sweet potatoes? I think not.

As for when I'm under the weather - tea and toast. Lots of tea and toast. Feel better soon!

Ooh, I'd love to win a spiralizer! I haven't made sweet potato fries, but when I make regular potato oven fries I cut the potatoes into 8-10 lengthwise wedges, toss them in olive oil, S&P and roast them for 20 minute or so on 425. I'd love to be able to make hash browns with a spiralizer, though!

When I'm not feeling well my favorite thing is white rice with Earth Balance and salt, and maybe a little cinnamon. Totally nutritionally void, but soothing.

when this girl is sick i crave sweet potatoes and frank's hot sauce...and soup soup soup...and tea...and really bad carby delights like toast and earth balance...and pasta with pesto...haha!

how long did you leave the fries in the oven? i would think the more olive oil the crispier they would get! maybe leave them in longer next time!

This looks DELICIOUS! You can never go wrong with sweet potatoes!

I always load up on garlic when I'm sick--I add it to everything! It helps your immune system out.

I'd love to win a spiralizer so I could make those! Sweet potatoes are my absolute favorite! I think my 8 mos. old daughter could eat these too!
When I'm sick I crave cold cereal and bananas.

When I think I've got something coming on, I immediately grab the lemon ginger echinachia (totally don't know how to spell that!) juice and watch garfield or simpsons in my bed, and i crave ... pizza!! soo bad. but ultimate comfort!

Ok, this is definitely what I'm going to spiralize; I never thought of potatoes. I think I'll try some Japanese yams mixed in so that I have a rainbow of orange, yellow, & purple. Yum.

Fries or hash it all looks good. ;-)

When we're sick it's Potatoes and garlic, especially in the form of vegan bubble and squeak. Mmm, comfort food. =)

Wow, that actually looks really delicious!!! Nice "mistake"!

Miso soup is great "sick" food! Feel better! Being sick is such a killjoy.

I actually have a recipe for Sweet Potato Hash in my cookbook. It's not spiralized, but after seeing this picture, I should totally make that an option.

YUM! These look awesome!!

I up my fluid intake AND carbs! Since the body's metabolism increases during illness and crabs are it's preferred method of energy... I get to indulge, haha!

When I'm sick, I ALWAYS crave two things: black pepper and citrus. I usually make my favorite salad (just chick peas, slaw-cuts, shredded carrots, and black olives with a little goddess dressing and TONS of black pepper on top) with a grapefruit as my side.

I think the sweet potato hash is a great idea, and how easy! When I'm sick, I go straight for a no-chicken broth pastina. It's what my mom always made me when I was sick and what I crave! Feel better!

I love toast with agave/ maple syrup and earth balance when I feel sick. If you melt the syrup with the earth balance first then put it on the post it is amazing!
If my stomach is upset toast also of course works, but I like apples, bananas, and plain oatmeal.

I never drink juice but the second I get sick I start to crave apple juice, it's all I want but it HAS to be Mott's it's the only kind I can drink, no other juice will cut it. I guess it just takes me back to childhood.

I really eat lightly when I am sick. Like a miso soup. If I have a cold I do teas like, throat coat or echinacea teas. They usually do the trick!

Michal said...

Girl you know I love my sweet p's. Whenever im feeling a little down I make some soup (recently miso is my favorite) and curl up with a good book.

I am sorry that you've felt sick. That is such a downer. I send you many well wishes!

And thanks for showing me all the fun things I can do with the spiralizer! I can't wait to own one! Maybe, just maybe, I'll win the giveaway! :)

Get well soon, Andria!
